About the GBLTC
Who We Are
The GBLTC is one of eight diversity commissions under the Associated Students of the University of Washington. We are an umbrella organization for gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, and ally students on campus.
Purpose
The mission of the Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, Transgender Commission (GBLTC) is to first support, educate, and offer safe space to gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender UW students. In addition, we aim to provide non-hetero-sexist, anti-racist, non-ablest and non-sexist programming and services. We aim to create an anti-oppressive community by funding, sponsoring and endorsing events, ideas, and information that share these anti-oppressive principles, promote community and work to increase a nurturing environment for all students.
History
In 1971 the first GBLT group was established, the Gay Students Association (GSA). The name of this group was changed in 1974 to the Gay People's Association (GPA), and then changed again to the Gay Men and Lesbian Association (GMLA), and finally to the Gay Bisexual and Lesbian Association (GBLA). Then in May of 1991 the ASUW Board of Control passed bill #144 which granted commission status for the Gay, Bisexual and Lesbian Commission. The final name of the commission was changed in September of 1997 to the Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, Transgender Commission.
How to Find Us
The GBLTC maintains office space in the Husky Union Building (HUB) room 304L. Click here for a copy of a 3rd floor map. Anyone is welcome to stop by and hang out. Just outside the office, there is a topic board which often displays information concerning something GLBTI related. Also, there are event postings from the community posted outside and inside the office along with brochures and other information about community organizations.
Director
The GBLTC is staffed by the Director, Yecelica Valdivia. Yecelica is a senior majoring in Anthropology and Women Studies and minoring in Environmental Studies. If you are interested in being more involved in the campus community, have questions about ASUW, are interested in social justice, or just want to meet her stop on by the office!
