Drag Competition
Welcome to the 2007 Drag Compeittion Headquarters
The "rules" for the Student Drag Competition are fairly simple. First, all members of the performing group must be current University of Washington students. Second, all groups must audition at the scheduled times. If there are any time conflicts contact the ASUW GLBTC office at asuwgblc@u.washington.edu or 206.685.4252 before January 15th.
Tryout Expectations – Below is a list of what each group will have to provide during their tryout. But don't worry; you won't be expected to have the entire performance perfected. We just need to get an idea of what it is you are doing.
- Have your act centered on the idea of gender performance (see below for an explination if you need an explination).
- Have your music on a CD and queued up to the song you are using.
- Sign-up for a time slot on the list outside the GBLTC office (HUB 304 L).
- Be on time so that the tryouts can run as smoothly as possible.

What is a performance of gender?
- Drag has a historical basis in the performance of gender. This is based around the idea that everyone in society is affected by expectations around their perceived gender. In return we act certain ways and dress certain ways to fulfill theses expectations. Because of this imposed phenomenon there have been people that rebel against societal norms. These people are making a statement about what gender is, how it is perceived, and how it is acted out. In essence, this is what doing drag is. Drag is about entertaining through gender performance and often over emphasizing societal gender roles whatever that may mean to the particular performer. True, there is a heavy emphasis on fun and entertainment, but there is also this aspect of defying norms around gender. So keep this in mind as you are preparing your act for this year’s Drag Competition because we will be judging on how well you incorporate these ideas as much as how entertaining your act is.
- If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask!
